Estimating from outputs of oversampled delta-sigma modulation

چکیده
Oversampling a delta-sigma-modulated sequence, one can compute unbiased sample estimates of averages of consecutive input elements for a wide variety of inputs. We prove that these estimates are most e cient in their class (that is, variances of sample means are minimum in the class of random binary sequences gn, n = 1; : : : ; N , such that the expected values of gn are equal to the values of the corresponding inputs of delta-sigma modulation) and consistent. Delta-sigma modulation may also be described as one-dimensional error di usion (a technique for digital halftoning). However, delta-sigmamodulation is not a practical digital halftoning algorithm, because human vision averages small luminance deviations in two dimensions. We pose an open problem that invites the reader to extend our approach to the two-dimensional case for the purpose of development of a practical digital halftoning algorithm. A Nonlinear Noise-Shaping Delta-Sigma Modulator with On-Chip Reinforcement Learning∗
The stability and quality of noise shaping is a concern in the design of higher-order delta-sigma modulators for oversampled analog-to-digital conversion. We reformulate noise-shaping modulation alternatively as a nonlinear control problem, where the objective is to find the binary modulation sequence that minimizes signal swing in a cascade of integrators operating on the difference between th...

متن کاملA Delta-Sigma beamformer with integrated apodization
This paper presents a new design of a discrete time Delta-Sigma (∆Σ) oversampled ultrasound beamformer which integrates individual channel apodization by means of variable feedback voltage in the Delta-Sigma analog to digital (A/D) converters. The output bit-width of each oversampled A/D converter remains the same as in an unmodified one. The outputs of all receiving channels are delayed and su...

Oversampled analog-to-digital ( A D ) converter architectures offer a means of exchanging resolution in time for that in amplitude so as to avoid the difficulty of implementing complex precision analog circuits. These architectures thus represent an attractive approach to implementing precision A/D converters in scaled digital VLSI technologies. This paper examines the practical design criteria...
متن کاملImproved Error Estimates for First Order Sigma-delta Systems
A sigma-delta modulator converts a sequence of real numbers bounded by 1 into a digital sequence with entries +1 and 1 only. When the input sequence consists of samples of a bandlimited function, oversampled by a factor with respect to its Nyquist frequency, we prove that filtering the digital output with an appropriate kernel reproduces the original bandlimited function up to an error of at mo...
